Rough Country, A Virgil Flowers Novel by John Sanford

Right after reading the final Lucas Davenport "Prey" novel by John Sanford, I swore I'd by no means read yet another of his books. What can I say? I am weak - and desperate. There just is not that significantly excellent reading out there, so when I saw "Rough County" I decided to take a opportunity. It is fantastic!

I think Sanford produced the suitable choice when he spun Virgil Flowers off from the crew in the Davenport books. Lucas Davenport has grow to be domesticated and, nicely, boring. Virgil, on the other hand, is young, intelligent, surfer-boy cute and a superior cop. He drives a truck with his aluminum boat hooked onto the back, just in case he decides to go fishing, and often misplaces his gun. He's a babe-magnate which tends to make this story actually enjoyable. It really is around a murder that happens at an all lady lodge in northern Minnesota, and several of the lady are Lesbians.

Poor Virgil is on holiday out fishing with his buddy, Johnson Johnson (definitely!) when Davenport calls and asks him to cut his trip quick to investigate a murder at Eagle's Nest. A lady was out paddling about the lake and an individual shot her in the head. Virgil begins investigating and runs into additional than one particular suspect. The dead lady, Erica, had a quick dalliance with Wendy, the lead singer in an all girl band. Berni, aka Raven, Wendy's key girlfriend wasn't also content to hear that bit of news. Virgil puts her on the list of suspects. Then there is Ruth, Erica's life companion. Did she know around the hanky-panky at the lodge? The list of suspects grows extended and exciting.

The starting of the book is rapid-paced and incredibly funny. Sanford has a knack for developing colorful, but believable characters. By the middle, I knew who the killer was and was quite confident of the major plot twist. Toward the end, the pace slowed down - way down till by web page 350, I was skimming. Also substantially detail, clear filler. I know the book would have been a superior, tighter book with fewer pages. I do have one particular other picky. A single of the most important characters was Wendy's father who's name is Slibe. Now, I have no clue how to pronounce this name - 1 word SLIBE or two SLI-BE? Thus, every single time I came upon this name, and it was frequent, I stopped to attempt and figure out the pronunciation! As an author you do NOT want to do that mainly because just about every time you stop a reader, there is a chance he/she will not start once again!

All in all, I enjoyed the book partly for the reason that I grew up in Minnesota and am a tiny familiar with the territory and characters. "Rough Nation" is a speedy read in spite of its length and I do advocate it.
