Coach On The Rez Series, Episode I

AS HE FOLLOWED the rest of his group out the rival college's front doors, Coach Bear Pakootas gradually trailed behind. Shaken by the choices of the Arrow Lakes college board members, he felt the moistening of his eyes. As the liquid pushed on the edges of these eyelids, he fought to hold his tears from breaching the dam. Bear malingered behind so they would not notice his disappointment. He had to stay stoic as he believed, Mustn't let them see my aggravation, can not let them see me tear-up, get challenging Bear, toughen up. As Capable Graffis and 3 of his San Poil directors approached the college van, Bear scrambled for the single backseat; he was in no mood to go over the evening's events.

They have been a strange-hunting lot as the 3 college board members, male and female alike wore cowboy boots, faded jeans, western shirts, and colorful Pendleton jackets of turquoise, vibrant red, deep orange and pleasing yellow. By contrast, In a position and Bear dressed similarly to each other as if they'd just stepped out of the 1950's. Bear wore saddle footwear of black and cordovan, black more than-the-calf diabetic socks, charcoal-grey dress slacks, a light-green button-down-collar, quick-sleeve shirt, and a dark green and grey argyle-patterned, front-buttoned sweater vest. The vest stretched at the seams and strained at the buttons to evince the truth that Bear had gained a different ten pounds more than the previous year. In a position wore a similar uniform, but with dusty, cracked, black wing-recommendations, and a light khaki wind-breaker.

Capable buckled up, checked the rear view mirror, gradually pulled out of the properly-lit parking lot, and shouted from the driver's seat, "Hey, at least we got 'em to take our little ones for fall sports... may well a been a lot worse!"

The 3 San Poil college directors chatted amongst themselves, but Bear wasn't prepared to join the conversation. He believed, Possibly if we had all 5 board members we might've presented a much more convincing front. Perhaps they would've taken our children for basketball also, and why the heck would not they want me to coach, at least as an assistant.

The future looked dim for San Poil Higher College. The enrollment was low as an rising quantity of parents had been fleeing to Chewelah, Electricdale, Govan, or Spokane. San Poil was currently low in numbers as they had been on the periphery of the reservation with no big corporations, only a tribal neighborhood center, overall health clinic, grocery, a post workplace, and a smaller library.
