The Man Next Door Who Owned One Dollar

I will in no way neglect Mr. Emptycup. He was an elderly gentleman who lived subsequent door to me and my people when I was a boy developing up in a modest town in Missouri. He hated his final name, "Emptycup" and wanted every person to contact him Ben.

Practically each and every day soon after college, I walked more than to support him with chores. His residence looked like it were beaten to death. The harsh storms in the fall had ruined the roof and blown out windows and doors. He was very terrible and could not afford to repair it up. The modest dollars he had only went so far to fix his residence, which seemed to be hanging collectively by a handful of substantial band aids. Ben by no means had a great deal to eat. Thankfully, some of the other neighbors pitched in with what they could possibly afford to do for him.

Ben lived frugally, of course. He had very handful of assets, except for a meager month-to-month verify from Social Safety. He had no investments to speak of, or, at least I believed. One particular day, when I was assisting him rake his yard, he asked me to come in to enable him move a pretty heavy cardboard box he had kept in a closet. The box looked worn as if it hadn't been opened in decades. I lifted it up and set it down on a table. It was taped tightly collectively, but we managed to open it by cutting it with a knife.

All we saw in it had been old shirts, pants, footwear that had been full of dust. Ben realized the products belonged to him when he was considerably younger. We decided to take them out to see what else was inside. Then we heard a smaller metallic thump. We looked about us and we saw a substantial shiny coin that landed on the floor.

I picked it up very cautiously and showed it to Ben. He examined it, but did not recognize it. He gave it to me. One particular side had an image of an eagle with its wings raised. Above it study, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." On the bottom, it study, "TRADE DOLLAR." I turned it more than and produced out the outline of a seated lady holding a branch from her proper hand. At the bottom, I study some numbers, "1885."

Ben stared at it with his mouth wide open. He stared straight ahead and stated, "I bear in mind! My father gave that to me several years ago, 1930, I feel." He sat down on an old chair. "My father told me not to lose it. I wonder... "

He stared at me. We had been each considering the identical point: what is its worth?

He got up from his chair and opened the phone directory beneath "Coin Dealers". We only saw two advertisements. We wondered who was the most respected. A Dr. Kimble was a effectively-identified coin dealer. He was a member of most key coin organizations. It was late in the afternoon when Ben decided to contact his workplace and arrange to bring the coin more than to his retailer the subsequent day.

It was Saturday and I was out of college. I might hardly wait to see how substantially the coin could be value. At ten:00 A.M. Ben and I got in his beat up old '79 Ford truck and drove to Dr. Kimble's coin retailer. Ben had cautiously placed the coin in a tiny envelope.

When we arrived at the Dr. Kimble's workplace he saw us walking and unlocked his door. He greeted us with firm handshakes. "Let's see the coin," he mentioned enthusiastically. Ben reached into his pocket and gave the envelope to him.

Dr. Kimble took out a pair of glasses and opened a set of magnifying glasses. He cautiously opened the envelope containing the coin, and held it by its edges. He studied the coin for fifteen minutes with a disapproving grimace. This was going to be terrible news.

Kimble stated, "I've got superior news and poor news. Which do you want initially?"

Ben nervously stated, "The negative news."

Kimble grinned. "The negative news is that there are a lot of forgeries of this certain silver dollar."

"We located that coin yesterday in some old garments I hadn't noticed it because 1930," Ben exclaimed.

"Effectively, that becoming mentioned, I can give you some superior news... very fantastic news!"

"What's it?" We mentioned collectively.

"This is an incredibly uncommon silver trade dollar in gorgeous situation! Only 5 are recognized to exist! So, if it is real, we will know there are six in existence. This coin could possibly fetch $700,000 or a lot more at auction."

Our mouths and eyes opened wide as we looked at every other in full shock.

"Now, of course, I want a colleague to look at it to make certain this is the real McCoy," Kimble remarked. "He's also a dear buddy who functions at Heritage Coins Auctions. So, if the coin checks out as getting real, it may possibly be placed in the subsequent auction in two months. We agreed to his tips and decided to wait two months.

Time passed gradually but two months later, our 1885 Trade Dollar sold at auction for $1,430,000! Ben celebrated in style: not only did he repair his residence, he added a swimming pool. He might even afford to employ his own own employees to take care of his residence upkeep, but he did not go that far. He paid back all the cash that the neighborhood had kindly provided him more than the years when he was very negative; he repaid every person with 50 % interest. Ben even donated a tidy sum to 5 worthy causes.

Two years later, Ben Emptycup passed away. Of course, I was very sad to see him go. Personally, I consider he may well have afforded to adjust his final name to "Cupful."
